Newbie question was created by Baronflick
Hello everyone. I've just got C & C and have a real newbie question! At the start of the battle each side is allocated a certain number of Command cards eg Roman 5 Carthagian 4, but how many cards are you allowed to use each turn? I'm reading it as just one but just want to check.

Anyway I'm hoping to get a quick response from you guys as I'm going to play my first proper game tomorrow which will evidently throw more questions your way!

Thanks

Chris

Yep, that's correct - just one per turn. Hope you enjoy the game!

Hi Chris,
as noted by xaqar you can only play 1 Command Card per turn.

Rules reference here :

At the start of your turn, play one Command card from your hand.

P.S. welcome both on commandsandcolors.net/ancients Community!!!

Thanks for your quick responses!

We have just finished our first game (I lost as Carthage) playing the first scenario but it was very close with 4 victory banners each at one point. During the game we have just a couple of new questions that we would like help with.

1. If a unit is reduced to say 1 block when it makes any attacks in new turns does it still use say 5 attack dice if it was heavy infantry or fewer?

2. If a leader is with a unit that gets a flag against it does the leader nullify it, I think I read that it did but we couldn't see it in the rulebook.

3. When a flag die is rolled the unit must retreat back, it cannot moved sideways or through friendly troops so the result is loss of blocks or even total defeat?

Thanks, this ruleset seems really fun to play and its just nice to be able to get a game finished in an evening even if I did lose!

1. Yep. It still uses the same number of dice. Some say that the number of blocks rerpresents unit morale, rather than unit strength.

2. You're correct there too. The leader allows you to ignore one flag. Note that you may choose to take the retreat if you so choose.

3. Again, you've got the rule right. You must always retreat to your side of the board, and may not go through occupied hexes. For each hex which you are unable to retreat one block is lost.

Watch out! It's a very addicting system! Which reminds me...I still need to buy Expansion 4 to complete my set!

Having played a few games now and reading through the rules again we are really worried that we've been playing incorrectly!

When ordering units using the Command cards only those units can move, battle eg range or close combat or take a special action.

We have been playing that any unit can make a range attack and units in unresolved close combat can continue fighting even if they haven't been specifically ordered by the Command Card!

Can you please correct us if needed.

Thanks

Only units which are ordered by command cards may can take actions, including ranged combat, and continuing close combat.

Only units that have been ordered by the play of a commmand card can move/battle.

When I first played, for some reason we were playing that every close combat triggered a "battle back" event. Of course when we realised how wrong that was we had a bit of a laugh.

Also took a moment to realise the importance of "retreat" directions!

Learning new systems is always fun :-)
