Battling back against elephants

Greetings!

I have a doubt. Let's say an elephant unit makes close combat against a light infantry unit while being surrounded by other enemy units: if the light infantry unit survives and battles back, it could cause havoc if it scores a flag, because it would activate a rampage that could damage all the units surrounding the elephants. I guess that battling back is optional, so I think that in such a situation it would be better not to do it. Is this correct?

Thank you!

Yes, battling back is optional.

Same for attack - it is optional, with one exception: warriors moving 2 hex (literally speaking, they are charging) must finish move next to unit they intend to attack and the, provided unit was not eliminated by another friendly unit, attack it.
