Alexander the Great Campaign

We had so much fun with the Gallic Campaign that we decided to move on to Alexander the Great. Hugo will be playing the Macedonian enemies, while I will be trying to replicate the amazing success of Alexander.

For those of you who are interested, here is our progress doc/spreadsheet:

We are going to play it straight up, with the exception being that we will have a provision for the battlefield death of Alexander which will reduce him to a "normal" leader in future battles, and start the opposing side with an automatic victory banner.

A21 The Lyginus

An ominous start to the campaign for Alexander, who came within a single block of defeat. This battle was eerily similar to the Gallic campaign in terms of deployment and setup.

After the Triballi infantry rushed the Macedonian center and scored two early banners, Alexander himself led the counterattacks that eliminated 4 Thracian units. An ensuing turn led to the surrounding of a Triballi LC, but the Macedonians were unable to get the final hit, which let the enemy first escape, then come back with a mounted charge that set up the climactic final turn: first the Triballi were within a single hit of victory after shrugging off an ineffective FS card that could've ended the game, and after surviving the roll, the Macedonians played their own MC card and gained the final banner.

5-4 Macedonian victory. An exciting start to the campaign, with the near-upset of Alexander by a barbarian tribe!

A44 Assault on Thebes

www.commandsandcolors.net/ancients/maps/...on-thebe-335-bc.html

A more conventional battle than the first, with a Macedonian army using its numbers and heavy infantry to rush the Theban battlements and hold off a fierce counterattack. Despite the early lead which seemed insurmountable, the Thebans expertly repositioned their troops and regained the walls, forcing Alexander to consolidate his infantry for an all-out assault to take the walls yet again.

A bloody victory that provided yet another bad omen for the superstitious Alexander, as Hugo once again showed his proclivity for killing leaders on the battlefield. Alexander's probability of surviving this campaign does not appear to be high!

5-3 Macedonian win. Fairly straightforward battle that the Macedonian player should win each time if able to maintain the initiative starting on turn 1. As a 5-banner scenario, it is also a good choice for a battle if time is limited.
