CCA2024, QF, Mantinea
Game 1
Max/Viridovilas, Argives, 6 banners taken, 34 blocks lost
SteveT, Spartans, 8 banners taken, 30 blocks lost
Battle began with the Argive right flank advancing towards the Spartan left. The Spartan hoplites sacrificed themselves so that their lights could escape towards the centre (2-1). After some ranged fire on the other flank, the Spartan centre advanced and gained the advantage in a ferocious hoplite melee, including with the death of Nicostratus with his Argives (6-7). The battle ended on the right, with Spartan LC cutting off the retreat of Argive LC, who were then destroyed by Spartan hoplites and slingers (6-8)
Game 2
SteveT, Argives, 8 banners taken, 31 blocks lost
Max/Viridovilas, Spartans, 7 banners taken, 42 blocks lost
This time the Argive right flank, lacking sufficient orders, was slow to attack, and the Spartans were able to refuse their left. Ranged fire followed on both flanks, with the Spartans being a little more effective and the Argive cavalry elected to retreat behind their phalanx. At last the Argive right reached the Spartans, and fierce fighting ensued in and around the woods; Thrasylus died with his Argive hoplites and a Spartan leader fled (!) the field (4-4). The right of the Spartan phalanx advanced, while the left took casualties and fell back before effective massed Argive missile fire from the captured woods. Then the phalanxes clashed, but the Spartans had been more weakened by missile fire, and although Laches fell with his men, the Argive phalanx emerged victorious after a gruelling fight (8-7).

Both games were very tough, very challenging and great fun. The luck was generally even and we both generally had good cards, and each battle could easily have gone the other way. Thanks to Max for a great pair of games.

Game 1

Milla (Antigonus)  2 banners won
Boredbeyondbelief (Eumenes)  7 banners won

Eumenes starts the battle by advancing his left flank cavalry and elephant, forcing Antigonus's elephant to retreat.  Antigonus responds by issuing a line command order.  Eumenes's elephant advances again and does some damage to Antigonus's heavy infantry.  Another elephant attack sees one of Antigonus's heavy infantry destroyed, with another taking heavy losses before defeating the elephants.

Antigonus then moves his leader to his left flank, pushing back the medium cavalry.  Eumenes issues a line command order, destroying the weakened heavy infantry.  Antigonus's cavalry leader on the left flank charges forward, weakening but failing to destroy Eumenes's elephant.

Eumenes orders his troops to darken the sky, but this causes few casualties.  Antigonus launches another failed attack against Eumenes's elephants.  Eumenes brings his Silver Shields in to push back the cavalry.

Antigonus's infantry advances in a line, and wipes out one of the opposing heavy infantry.  Eumenes's counter attacks and destroys both a heavy infantry and the leader commanding it, with the Silver Shields damaging a medium infantry.  Antigonus attempts to counter with his cavalry and elephants but only causes minor casualties.  Eumenes's leader and cavalry on the left flank then launch an assault, destroying three units and winning the battle

Game 2

Boredbeyondbelief (Antigonus)  3 banners won
Milla (Eumenes)  7 banners won

Eumenes begins by advancing some of his heavy infantry units in the centre to fill in some gaps in the line.  Antigonus sends his left flank cavalry forward and unsuccessfully fires at Eumene's elephants.  Eumenes counter attacks and forces the cavalry back.  A second cavalry charge destroys Eumenes's elephants.

Eumenes again attacks on his right to try and remove Antigonus's cavalry.  Eumenes's next attack is with his left flank cavalry, which Antigonus manages to push back.  Antigonus then launches a cavalry attack on both flanks, which causes some damage but fails to destroy any units.

Antigonus then launches a mounted charge on both flanks, but a first strike from Eumenes's medium cavalry kills Antigonus's right flank leader.  Antigonus's left flank leader's cavalry is destroyed but the leader manages to escape.  A light cavalry unit of Antigonus is wiped out in the following skirmish.

Antigonus then follows with yet another cavalry attack on the right flank - however this attack leads to him losing his elephant troops.  One of Eumenes's medium cavalry is eliminated in the attack.  Eumenes follows up with an attack by his heavy infantry, which kills a medium cavalry.  Antigonus's remaining leader on the right flank takes the opportunity to shield his weakened unit to the rear of his army.

With one banner required for victory, Eumenes attacks a heavy cavalry unit on his left flank, but only succeeds in forcing it to retreat.  Antigonus the advances his line.  A few skirmishes in the centre result in casualties but no unit losses.  Eumenes sends his heavy infantry leader in the centre to meet Antigonus's heavy infantry leader.  Some heavy fighting sees casualties on both sides, but ultimately Eumenes's forces win their final banner.

Match 1

soul1st (Antigonus) 5 banners won

JawaNick (Eumenes) 7 banners won

The first phase of the game saw some exchanging fire between the light units of both sides followed by cavalry attacks by both sides. Eumenes scored the most banners in this phase. The score was 6 for Eumenes and 3 for Antigonus. Antigonus brought up the heavy troops and scored two more banners with his heavy cavalry. Eumenes responded with his HC securing the win againts a weakend light unit.

Match 2

JawaNick (Antigonus) 5 banners won

soul1st (Eumenes) 7 banners won

For the most part the battle started the same as the first match, with most action coming from light and cavalry units. Then both sides fought it out with their heavies where Eumens got the upper hand.

Match 1
Tuscan Centurion (Antigonus) 7
Chrispy (Eumenes) 2

Despite some good early ranged fire hits by Eumenes both players were frustrated by a lack of useable cards at the start. After a bit of cycling through some decent cards came out and things started moving in the centre between infantry with Line commands, inspired leadership and counterattacks bringing the two sides together. In the end some good play and dice rolls got Antigonus the crushing win.

Match 2
Chrispy (Antigonus) 2
Tuscan Centurion (Eumenes) 7

This time Eumenes had good cards to start and got Mounted units moving on both Flanks. Antigonus made a hasty charge too on the right with LIghts that were quickly dispatched by Elephants and Heavies. While infantry slowly advanced in the centre it came down to a clash of the mounted units on the flanks with leaders evading back to their lines and cavalry being crushed by Elephants. 5 of the lost Antigonid units were mounted.

Note: For clarity, Left and Right refer to the sides of the battlefield, not the commanders point of view.

Marco (Eumenes) 7
kwofford (Antigonus) 3

Eumenes began by moving LI to cover his ELE on the right. Antigonus advanced his LC on the right for missile fire, but one was driven off by a surprising early Spartacus command. Antigonus then advanced his mounted units on the left, while Eumenes countered with a Move-Fire-Move that sent the remaining LC on the right off the field. Antigonus responded by advancing his entire line forward. A couple of Eumenes LI moved into the center to harry the HI and LDR with missile fire, but then Antigonus attacked on the left with his mounted units. Although Eumenes fell his LI back, Antigonus pressed the left attack, ultimately losing his ELE. After Eumenes moved his left LI into a defensive position, Antigonus advanced his LI across the field into forward positions, then followed with himself in an all out Inspired LDR+4 on the left, bringing himself and his HC and MC into battle. When the dust had settled, Antigonus had picked up three banners and the score was suddenly 3-2. Eumenes responded with a Mounted Charge, driving Antigonus back and heavily damaging his HC. Antigonus charged back in to support his AUX on the left, but they failed to kill the ELE. Finally Eumenes double timed his center line into action. Shifting to the left, they eliminated three cavalry units, including shooting the horses out from under Antigonus himself twice. After evading to a nearby HI, Antigonus ordered his band of HI and advanced into the center. Antigonus himself on a HI attacked an opposing LDR on his own HI, doing 2 block damage to both. Eumenes played a Counter Attack and brought two HI against Antigonus’s damaged unit, killing it and then him in the ensuing single die LDR Check. It was a surprise quick ending to a wide ranging and uncertain battle.

Marco (Antigonus) 7
kwofford (Eumenes) 6

The battle opened with an Order Lights, a Counter Attack, and finally a Move-Fire-Move, so both sides enjoyed arrow showers in the morning, to no significant effect other than to get the LI where everyone wanted them. After moving his right LDR from LC to MI, Antigonus endured more arrows from a nice Darken the Sky, which left the LDR on a two block MI. Then a Line Advance brought Antigonus’s entire Infantry forward. Eumenes brought forward units on the right, but Antigonus fell back there, and connected his line across the rest of the field to center and left. After Eumenes advanced on the left, Antigonus used an Order Heavy to bring his entire HI into the center, backing the line himself with his HC on the left. Not to be outdone, Eumenes played the same command, bringing his HI forward to the center and attacking with his ELE on the right. The ELE had no effect, and ran off three hexes to the rear. After some LI positioning and missile fire on both sides of the center, Eumenes had constructed a continuous line almost completely across the field, while Antigonus was divided into two groups, left and right. Eumenes advanced a group of three HI against their counterparts, eliminating one HI for first blood. An attack by Antigonus next turn netted two banners, but was ultimately blunted by a well timed First Strike which sent the LDR running to the rear. Not good for Antigonus. Eumenes followed with his HC to the center to eliminate another HI, taking the score to 3-2 and placing all four LDRs in adjacent hexes. Antigonus used a Mounted Charge to bring forward all his cavalry, surrounding Eumenes himself on his HC. Eumenes survived and escaped, but his fellow LDR didn’t, and the score went to 5-4 Antigonus. Eumenes followed with an Inspired Left LDR+4, and then a Mounted Charge which brought all his cavalry and both ELE into play. Although he killed an MC, the ELE died against the fully bolstered HI. Score was now 6-5. An Order Mounted by Eumenes brought his other ELE into play, which finished off a badly wounded MI and sent his LDR running off the field. Unfortunately the MA BCC for the ELE did not succeed , and it fell to the BattleBack, leaving the field to Antigonus. Thanks kwofford for a tense game to the end.

rjvonline vs jarib

The favored side (Eumenes) won both games.

1-7
I was Antigonus. I started off well (killing an elephant at range with 2 dice!), but then my shooting went down to shit despite having the right cards (lights, move-shoot-move, and the double-shooting card) which scored close to nothing. After that multiple cavalry/elephant actions (2 mounted charges, Spartacus, ...) proceeded to destroy both of my wings. The infantry barely got into it.

7-4
I was Eumenes. I don't much remember the details, but Jarib got into it on the wings too, especially on my left, but this time his efforts were not quite as successful. A first strike was helpful in blunting his continued EL/HC attacks on my left wing. The EL then died to a Phalanx attack, and the HC ended up trapped on my rear line and destroyed for my 7th VP (its leader died too, but that was just icing on the cake).

Congrats to Jarib for winning the match. Thanks to Mark for organizing as always. Winning only 2 of matches, even if I did win 6 of my 10 games, wasn't going to cut it. Looking forward to the next OT!

A true tie in our match up, with Eumenes victorious in both. First game was characterized by successful cavalry charges (each side picking up a Mounted Charge early on). Second game was characterized by ill-fated cavalry charges!

Eumenes managed to crush the right flank (the left flank of the anthogoni) with some cavalry charges: 6 VP on that side.
The seventh VP was generated by an EL that suffered a BAN and crushed a damaged friendly unit on the rear...

A completely different game.
The sides tried to face each other on both flanks with the cavalry but in the end they failed to gain anything more than a couple of victory points.
The Eumenes side brought forward the whole army while the Antigonus elephant dared a risky advance, survived and managed to eliminate a couple of key units.
In the final head-on clash the Antogonus side managed to close the game 7-4.

Match 1
EZPickins (Antigonus)  # 2
scrum4you (Eumenes)  # 7

Antigonus started with a sustained attack on the left which took out an A and E from Eumenes at the cost of Antigonus MCx2, HC, E, and A after 5.5 turns of back and forth. After this the score was 5-2 in favor of Eumenes and the right side had started to engage.

Antigonus went after the right E, but unfortunately cut off his retreat path. This resulted in an LBC and LC getting destroyed by rampaging and block retreats, ending the game at 7-2 in favor of Eumenes in six turns.

Match 2
scrum4you (Antigonus)  # 3
EZPickins (Eumenes)  # 7

This 3.5 Turn (!) game was a game of very lucky rolls mixed with very unlucky rolls. It was also pretty much a mounted-only game.

Antigonus advanced on the right and took out the Eumenes E with 2of2 reds rolled (lucky!). Eumenes responded with Mounted Charge, weakened Antigonus LC and LBC on the right to one block, and took out an A but lost an LC. The score was 1-2 Antigonus. Antigonus responded with Mounted Charge, which he used to hide his weakened LC/LBC behind the line. Eumenes responded with Counter Attack (3rd Mounted Charge in a row!) and took out an A and an MC on the left, but had ineffective dice on the right.

Antigonus killed the attacking LBC on the right, then made a foolish LC attack against HC and lost the LC. The score was 4-3 in favor of Eumenes. Eumenes played Order Mounted, pushed his right HC up against the 1-block LBC and LC pinned against the back line, and attacked an E and HC on the left using an E and MC in an attempt to win the game. He took out the LBC, LC on the right and then rolled 2 reds to have a 1 block MC take out a 2 block HC. This ended the game at 7-3 Eumenes in 3.5 turns!

The infantry on both sides pretty much stayed in their original positions!

Eumenes  GHeintz   2 banners

Eumenes' silver shields were killed off in a counterattack to start but tied the game at 1-1, Eumenes double time netted a banner but lost a heavy in battle back. Antigous double netted 2 banners plus killed a leader to make it 5-2. Eumenes send in his elephant and heavy cav in the center but comes up short and the elephant and heavy cav were killed in battle back. Not much Geoff could have done in this one as I had extremely good dice in battle backs.

Antigonus- Gheintz    7 banners
Eumenes - PCScipio42  4 banners

Eumenes got off to a bad start and Geoff was quick to capitalize going up 3-0, killing one elephant unit in the process. Eumenes used some good cards and hot dice to eventually tie it up at 4-4. Antigones used "I am Sparty" to go up 5-4. Eumenes tried an elephant charge but it was killed in battle back. Antigonus then used an elephant charge of his own to win 7-4.

Match 1

BradJ (Antigonus)  1 banner won
Javelinthrower (Eumenes)  7 banners won

A very one-sided game. I was lucky with constant special orders and dice favored me more often than not. The positioning for Brad was often somewhat unlucky. After the initial ranged exchange, the left flank became the primary battlegrounds. Antigonus has the only elephant there, so shooting it with a very green Eumenes flank was easy, preparing for a possible mounted assault, if needed. LI evaded any attempts at close combat, and elephant charge into that greenery was a bit misjudged, as it led to losing an elephant. A follow-up on Brad's side with Double time featuring two AUX and one HI without leader was not lucky, again, because of green units, and it put them in range of my own elephant and cavalry. After that the centre remained weakened and still moved closer, once again positioning them too close to the elephant. In the end only a couple of lucky leaders survived on the backside, lost wothout their troops.

Match 2

Javelinthrower (Antigonus)  6 banners won
BradJ (Eumenes)  7 banners won

Once again, this cursed flank. This time both flanks got more action with a lot of shooting. Both my and Brad's elephants got injured but survived. I attempted to gather a stronger fist with 2 AUX and an Elephant, but a charge left it barely alive with 1 and 2 blocks, and so at once useless and vulnerable. Gathering forces from the centre with a double time (this time with two leaders) and striking at a weakened infantry and badly positioned cavalry allowed Eumenes to get 4 banners in one turn, gaining a lead. Any attempts on my part to try and maneuver the other flank with light cavalry in a useful position only further opened opportunities for attack. In the end, there were far too many holes opened, and 1-bloc light cav, safely positioned on the back row, still fell to enemy cav.

Overall, in my opinion both games show that Antigonus' forces are made up and initialy positioned favoring the opponent strongly. Still, was pretty fun to exchange the winning side.

Mark McG vs. taliapharaoh

Round 5, match 1

Mark McG - Antigonid - 1

taliapharaoh - Eumenes - 7

Mark quickly gained the upper hand in turn one, with a nice MFM which weakened my right by trampling those unfortunate units behind the elephants. I was lucky to be able to first counter that move by closing on his lights, and then even more so by a very lucky DTS which eliminated a 2nd unit and regained the initiative. Suffice it to say the gods were on the sides of the Eumenes army on this day, the proper sacrifices clearly had been made, both in cards and especially dice. I was able to break up the enemy center with a FS card and then incredible bb dice for a 5-1 lead. As my good fortune continued, all that remained was to isolate the last victory banners for the win.

Round 5, match 2

taliapharaoh - Antigonid - 7

Mark McG - Eumenes - 6

As usual, a very different type of game in match two, and Mark nearly snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. The infantry center, which had played such a big role in the previous game, barely participated in this battle. I tried to replicate Mark's success against the elephants on turn one, to no avail, and tried to blunt his counter with my light units on my left. This was a battle of maneuver, and my fortunate ability to move my cavalry while Mark's hand stalled out proved to be the difference, along with some well-timed range hits on his HC. Sitting comfortably with a 5-3 lead, I went for the kill and almost lost the match. Playing a MC card, I was stopped short of getting either banner by some missed rolls, and Mark made me pay, coming within a leader check of winning the game. I was ultimately able to hold on to a narrow 7-6 win by pushing some lights off of the map edge on my enemy's left.
