Game 2

Bangla (Macedonian) 6 banners

Two games that went the same way.  The Macedonians were always ahead but the hills on the Spartan left allowed them to hold long enough for the Spartan Hoplites to do just enough to win.
Two excellent games, played in a good spirit.

Marco: Spartan  7
BrentS: Macedonian  2

The battle began with both sides maneuvering LIT units to take the left side hills, which were eventually taken by the Mac MCAVs. Action moved to the center, but the Macs were separated, while the Sparts kept their MIs and MHs together and pushed against the Mac right side. Although the Mac MCAVs took two banners on and around the left side hills, the Sparts pushed forward to the center/right, crushing that side of the Mac line and finishing the battle 7-2.

BrentS: Spartan  7
Marco: Macedonian  4

This battle also began with both sides maneuvering LIT units to take the left side hills, but this time the Spartans sent a leader who supported a quick and decisive takeover. Action moved to the center, with the Sparts advancing while the Macs drew back. The Sparts sent addition support to the left, which proved to be decisive later. The Macs responded with a push on the left, but their MI proved useless, and was quickly dispatched when the Sparts crushed the Mac left, taking 3 banners in one turn. The Sparts then took the hills on the right, taking banners along the way. Although the Macs ultimately destroyed both Spartans special units, the Sparts used archery and maneuvering to destroy or chase off enough units to take the field. Thanks BrentS for a good game, and best wishes Australia to get through Covid safe n sound!

Match 1
Scipio1zama (Macedonian): 7 Banners
Benlore (Spartan): 3 Banners

Initial skirmishing on the right saw the Macs surround and eliminate the Sparty LC in the hills. A Mac Double Time and a Sparty Order Mounted that got the Hoplites moving saw more damage, followed by the Mac using Spartacus to kill an Aux, and the Spartans exchanging a MC to kill the Warrior.
Fighting switched to the center, where a Mac attack with damaged infantry units took out both Spartan (5-block) hoplites AND the leader, giving Macedonia a 6-1 lead until they lost a HI unit. There followed several turns of maneuvering as the Mac MC tried unsuccessfully to chase down a 2-block LS for the win. The seven remaining Spartan units turtled up, followed up by a great deal more maneuvering before the Mac inexorably closed in, the game ending with an exchange of Auxilia units.

Match 2
Scipio1zama (Spartan)): 7 Banners
Benlore (Macedonian)): 5 Banners

Most of the early and midgame fighting took place on the right side of the map in and around the hills, where the Spartans started off aggressively and got the worst of it, losing an Aux, MC and LS in exchange for the Macedonian Warrior. But the balance of the fighting took place in the center, and the 5 Spartan Hoplites really earned their pay, aided by a Counterattack to a Macedonian-played Mounted Charge, followed in short order by a Spartan Mounted Charge. These allowed the Hoplites to close into battle and the extra dice gave them the better of the exchange, racking up a Macedonian HI, two Aux and two MI while the Spartans lost just 2 hoplites. The Macedonians had a chance to win at the end, but the dice did not cooperate and a final attack by a Spartan hoplite saw a roll of 2 reds and 2 swords eliminate a 3-block HI for the winning banner.

Round 5 Game 2
Greg O (Spartans) 7 banners
TTK (Macedonians) 4 banners

The battle started fast with a Macedonian DT into the Spartan, where the Spartan's held firm and eliminated a Heavy and wounded a medium, and then the Spartan's counter attacked and eliminated the medium for an early lead.  The battle raged on with the Spartan's holding a lead but the Macedonians fought hard and smartly but in the end Antipeter went down with his Heavy Infantry and the battle ended with Sparta the victor.

Both matches were very even and could have gone to either side. The action was almost solely in the center section. Both sides got decimated in multiple attacks. After that the side most succesful in mopping up won.

Round 5 Game 1
spleen1980 (Macedonians) 7 banners
taliapharaoh (Spartans) 5 banners

I had a very good starting hand (Mounted, Charge, Rally, Line Command) and I quickly advanced forming a very compact line.
The spartans seems not intimidated and they draw the first blood with ranged fire and close combat.
The spartan army is soon split in two: on the left side an heroic macedonian auxilia unit survives three rounds of attacks, dealling little damange in the battle back, but slowing the progress of the enemy. On the right side a bold attack of the Spartans hoplites eliminates the heavy infantry of the macedonian army, but they end exposed and almost surrounded. I use a double time to surround the hoplites, killing also the leader during his escape.
Then, I try to protect my weakest unit and my leader, while the Spartans try to take down more units: the result is a series of inconclusive dice rolls, bloody battle backs, a very unlucky I Am Spartan for the Spartans and a Macedonian successful counterattack. We both need 2 banners to win. Travis attacks Antipater, the heavy infantry suffers hits, but stays in place and gathers 1 banner. I close the match with a Mounted Charge, launching a med infantry against a 1 block auxilia. Thanks to Travis for reminding me I could do the momentum advance and the bonus attack.

Round 5 Game 2
spleen1980 (Spartans) 6 banners
taliapharaoh (Macedonians) 7 banners

The beginning seems very promising for the Spartans. The fight is all on the right flank, where the hoplites deal a lot of damage. Again, Travis is very, very unlucky with the I Am Spartan card, which allows him to active only two units, not in useful positions.
I have 5 banners, Travis has 3, but the fight now is all about the left flank: I have only three units on the left, against a big and compact line of Macedonians. The turning point of the match is an attack of a med cavalry against Agis III: his soldiers take little damage, but he falls from the horse and break his neck.
On the right flank I try to deal damage, but the Macedonian units run away and are impossible to catch.
My survivors on the left, without the lead of Agis, are in real danger. At some point, my med infantry lures Antipater into a trap (first strike!), but it is completly inconclusive (1 hit only...), but in the next round a Clash of Shields allows an auxilia unit on the hill to take revenge on Antipater.
It 6 - 6 now. My two auxilia on the left begin an endless and unbelievable retreat: I think it took 8 turns for Travis to catch them, I just had all the cards I needed to flee.
I launch a final desperate attack with my light cavalry, which dies in the battle back giving the victory banner to Travis.

Very fun games! Thanks again Travis!

Round 5 Game 1
Mark McG (Spartans) 7 banners
Moose (Macedonians) 2 banners

Agis managed to get into position for a Doubletime into the lines, and did some excellent work. In the end, the Spartan centre was decimated, with a number of 1 block units hiding away. Bit of a mad scramble at the end, but the Spartans managed to win it on battleback. Guess that is what the 5 block units are for. Seemed to draw nothing but Centre cards, mostly order 2 or 3.

Despite a closer scoreline, the Macedonians seemed for more able to set the pace. An early Doubletime by the unnamed Macedonian leader and men almost backfired, with the Macedonian losses outweighing the gains, and the unnamed Spartan leader pushing forwards. Then Agis double timed up into the Macedonian line, and he was an albatross for the Spartan cause. 2 units were wiped out in a stroke under him, and whilst he lived to tell the tale, he was mostly useless. Meanwhile, Antipater was cutting down his strays until his phalanx was in turn cut down, and he fled to the cavalry to conclude the battle. Both Macedonian leaders ended up on the Medium Cavalry.. :-)

Round 2
David I (Macedonian) - Banners 7
Gomjabbar (Spartan) - Banners 4

After a trip to the mountains for Gom and a retreat from the mountains courtesy of a public health order for me we came to the re-match. It was tight last time with Gomjabbar edging to a win 7:6 in the face of two successive Mounted Charges from the Spartan hopllites.

This game started with a slightly ambitious foray by the Spartan medium cavalry leaving them exposed to a leader-led cavalry assault which was successful at one blow. Then a Line Command began the Spartan advance. The heavier units in the Macedonian centre retreated to either flank but the phalanx kept coming with Order Four Center. At this point the Macedonian leader really need to be back with his veteran foot soldiers! MFM allowed a few pot shots, one of which took two blocks off a bronze phalanx and allowed a re-alignment with the Macedonians now centred on the second rank. Finally engagement with Order Medium but only a single inconclusive melee ensued. Then Inspired Leadership on the right from Anitpater saw two hoplites succumb, one with a 1-in-16 roll against a full-strength unit. Macedonians must have made some timely sacrifices to the gods before this battle. 3-0.

The depleted ranks of the Spartans now played their trump card - a Mounted Charge. It started dismally on the right flank with a speculative light cavalry attack on the well-supported medium cavalry which was rebuffed, then on the left flank with a 1-in-8 5d failure to strike the single-block unit which had destroyed a full-strength hoplite the turn before. Then finally some better fortune as the two bronze block units carved through the centre killing two full-strength units without reply.  A scrappy exchange in which Antipater's veterans managed to weaken both the bronze units but perished along with the lucky 1-block Mediums left the score at 3-4. The bulk of the Macedonian force was stranded on their left with the Greeks predominant on the other flank.

The Macedonian cavalry combined to destroy the last Greek cavalry and scatter the slingers but again MFM allowed the Spartans to elude the threatened mounted charge and press forward on the left flank, threatening to corner the Macedonina light troops. Now the Macedonian luck came to the fore again as Antipater led a single auxilia to destroy a 1-block (7-in-8 ) and then a 3-block (1-in-8) bronze hoplite unit. 6-4. Order Four Left allowed the Spartans to tackle the medium cavalry and Antipater's untouchables. Result: more luck for Macedon as the cavalry evaded with a scratch and the Spartan auxilia were halved by Antipater's, once-again unscathed. Order Three Center and the cavalry finished off the weakend Spartan auxilia, characteristically with three swords.

Despite ridiculously good rolls Macedon only just managed to fend off the Spartan advance; a few crucial points and it could have ended very differently.

Thanks to Gomjabbar for playing so late in the evening and good luck for the next round.

I had everything to win this game. Double Time, Line Command and even successful First Strike. Good rolls. Spartacus and Clash of Shields in the hand were simply not used. Mere "Macedonian Massacre by Battle Sarissa". And "Four Blue Triangles Roll" giving his only VB to Michał is also to remember.

Polonus100 (Spartan) - Banners 7

Good beginning by Macedonians, but devastating Double Time by Spartans. Macedonians had simply no card to exploit numerical advantage, and Spartans, outnumbered but good positioned gain last decisive point. Battle in anniversary of iconic Polish (and Lithuanian-Ruthenian) Battle against Teutonic Order at Grunwald 1410. "Two naked sarrissas" didn't help.

Michał ordered well, especially at start of both battles, but had simply no luck in cards and rolls.
Hoping to play him in play-offs

Dice were not friendly to Sparta and favored the Macedonians to boot.  Game did not play as the final banner count indicates.

Game 2
Stephen (Macedonian) - Banners 7
Cavie (Spartan) - Banners 6

A much more evenly matched game both in the battle maneuvers and the dice percentages.  Stephen played a mounted charge that essentially set the tone for his win.  This game a few 3d rolls produced 3 hits w/o leader support!  Played out much more like I figured the scenario would this time

Game 1

Macedonia (Rand)  7 banners
Sparta (PCScipio42) 6 banners

Sparta got off to a 6-1 start with the aid of mounted charge +1 card. Macedonia was still able to form a decent line after that play. Score got closer and closer and eventually it was 6-6. Sparta had a chance with 1 unit that could either attack a weakened Aux or a medium. I chose the aux thinking if I didn't kill the Aux the resulting battle back would only be 3 dice as opposed to 4. Fate deemed that I should have chose the mediums to attack and Macedonia was able to finish off the Spartans next turn. Game was fun and intense and showed one should never give up in CC:A.

Game 2

Macedonia (PCScipio42) 7 banners
Sparta (Rand) 6 banners

Lightning does strike twice as Macedonia was down 6-1 and came back to win, partly due to a lucky bow shot killing a 1 block Sparta medium. Macedonia was lacking center cards and may have actually helped as Sparta was holding Clash of Shields and was just waiting for the Macedonians to get in contact. Couldn't ask for two better games.

R5 game 1

TTK Sparta 7:4 Gottoman Macedonian

Greg and I managed to play almost a classic scenario for the clash of hoplites.

the rearrangement of the lines, the slow approach...
the javelin throwers weakened both lines, the wounded retreated...

my Spartans went to the aggravation, but Greg's MI guys made many Spartan wives cry. So I lost 2 units at the first roll of the answer cubes. 2:2

the shooting thinned the Macedonian ranks and the Spartans escalated the situation again, however, they had to attract cavalry to the center 3:2

but Greg on the DT crashed into the ranks of the Spartans...
however, 5 blocks is a force and one remaining scattered THEM and kill the leader...

5:4... the center of the Spartans represents 2 HI units with leaders
the center of the Macedonians looks more impressive, but has no desire to aggravate, especially since the unfinished units have accumulated in the second line

the Macedonian cavalry invades the hills (Greg forgot in the heat of battle that she would only have 2 cubes there), but is ambushed by LI and LC... with losses, they were forced to roll back... 6:4

Spartan hoplites once again go to the aggravation, while the enemy is being rebuilt... they crash into the barbarians and 7: 4-victory.

Game 1
Giulio (Macedonian) 7
ExPickins  (Spartan) 2

The usual initial exchange of volleys in which the Spartan did relatively better. The Macedonian move closing with the enemy. Spartans engage but the Macedonian heavy infantry is strong and inflicting several casualties. However, Antipater dies prematurely (2 dice leader check) and this forces the Macedonian to act more swiftly. They attack on both wings, again the heavy infantry being the queen of the battlefield. A series of skirmishes on both sides give the Macedonians the victory.

Game 2
EzPickins (Macedonian) 4
Giulio (Spartan) 7

The Macedonians start strong on their left flank but lose a surrounded light cavalry. The Spartan try to maneuver to gain the advantage of the hills, eliminating the Macedonian warriors. The Macedonians advance in line. The initial impact with the Spartan troops is costly, leading to a 4-1 Spartan lead. But they take momentum and eliminate the most powerful Spartan hoplites. The game is essentially tied, with broken armies scattered over the battlefield. Several skirmishes develop, with the cavalry of both sides successfully escaping from ambushes. The Spartans are luckier and they manage to finally kill a Macedonian medium cavalry with the leader, for the victory

Match 1
Stanislav27 (Macedonian) 7
RiverWanderer  (Spartan) 6

The game was a very tight affair with Mark gaining the upper hand after the opening stages and pushing very hard for a winner on the Spartan left after great use of terrain and leaders. For me, personally, the first sign of impending doom was when Agis III led a charge against Antipater's full-strength Medium Infantry, crushing the unit in one fell blow and decapitating the Macedonian leader in the same swift stroke. The early fall of Antipater made for a precarious situation on the Macedonian right, so I focused as much as possible on the opposite wing. Parity was almost restored in this fashion. However, Mark's push against the weakened centre (formerly right) of the Macedonian army threatened a well-earned Spartan victory. In the last moment, however, the Goddess Fortuna smiled upon the Macedonians, and a single turn of missile fire scored two crucial victory banners; one from dispersing a unit of Spartan cavalry on the backline, and one from murdering Agis III with an extremely lucky throw of the Macedonian Auxilia's javelins. It was an unlikely victory, but fortune helped me snatch it from the jaws of defeat.

Match 2
RiverWanderer (Macedonian) 3
Stanislav27 (Macedonian) 7

In the second game, things were slightly reversed. In the sense that this time Sparta took up purely defensive positions on the left and sought to push on the right. The battle received its specific flavour from the first turn, where Mark used a Line Command to divide up his force in a left and right part - with me following suit immediately afterwards. Mark began peppering the Spartan left wing with missile fire, holding back a charge (and staying out of melee range) until the enemy had been softened up. I looked on with despair as my own return fire was less effective and in any case less coordinated. The decisive moment of the battle occurred when the Macedonians marched confidently on the Spartan right. This played somewhat into my hands, allowing me to be the first to charge, as I had a couple of "Order Medium" cards as well as "First Strike". But it mainly came down the absolutely extraordinary efficiency of my dice rolls in that handful of turns. The Macedonian Heavy Infantry on their left was slaughtered in one roll, and the Warriors took three hits in one roll. The Spartan Hoplites proved highly useful with their added cohesion/staying power, and - with some support from Auxilia and cavalry, scored all the victory banners on the Spartan right (the Macedonian left). Mark made the best possible use of his command resources, but there was no lucky break on the Macedonian right where the pressure was mounting and the Spartan bodies were piling up (mainly from missile fire). A spirited Macedonian resistance on the opposite flank led to some Spartan casualties, but it was too little too late. The battle was sealed when a hopeful charge by Macedonian light cavalry was encircled and dispatched on the bloodied hills of the Spartan right.

---

Thanks a lot to Mark for two challenging and fun battles. I think that my first victory was very fortuitous - especially as Mark would definitely have won on the next turn, if my LC2 had not been successful. The second one was more even with one half of the battlefield presenting any audience with a classic "slow-burner" of missile fire and jokeying for position, but where useful cards and devastating dice on the opposite flank resulted in a faster, bloodier affair, which in the end carried the day.

That was a really Spartan lucky game when they twice destroyed full troops, one of them on the battle back. So,it was diffficult to change something.

Big thanks to the Dawnreader! These were cool games.

Match 1

GomJabbar (Macedonian): 7 Banners

David I (Spartan): 6 Banners

The Macedonians started with a light unit charge up into the hills on each flank but quickly discovered the hills are not a good place to be, especially with cavalry. The Macedonians lost no units in the hills but took some hits and their attack stalled. Next the Macedonians spent a few turns slowly advancing units in the center and setting up for a big Line Command with almost all their foot units on the board. I played the Line Command a little earlier than I would have preferred but I was afraid that the Spartans were onto my strategy (which they were) and would break up my line any moment. 12 units ordered with the Line for 1 banner and 2 heavily damaged Medium Hoplite units. Not bad. The Spartans played a Mounted Charge gaining 2 banners but lost Agis in a battle back. Then the Macedonian heavies got involved and eliminated the 2 damaged MH units but a second Mounted Charge by the Spartans eliminated both heavies and a leader. Not looking good for the Macedonians. But then Antipater and some Auxilia and Medium troops eliminated a couple more damaged MH Spartans and they were back in the fight. The Macedonians only needed 1 more banner (6-5) to win. The Spartans then tried to run away with their damaged units eliminating an Aux on the way to tie the game up again. A timely Order Light Troops by the Macedonians allowed them to hide their heavily damaged units before they were picked off. The Spartan Light Cavalry got a little too overzealous and got into a position where the Macedonians were able to cut off retreat and evade and eliminated them with medium infantry for the win.
It was a close fought match. Thanks David for the game.
